San Diego State University (SDSU) has unveiled an ambitious plan to develop a senior living community as part of its Mission Valley campus expansion. This project, a collaboration between SDSU and several housing developers, aims to create an intergenerational hub that fosters meaningful connections and enhances the campus experience.
A Vision for Intergenerational Living
The proposed senior living community will be a seven-story building, offering a range of residences and amenities. With 224 independent and assisted living units, 26 memory care residences, and facilities like a restaurant, fitness center, and rooftop deck, it promises a vibrant and engaging environment.

Construction and Partnerships
Construction is set to commence at the end of 2027, with an anticipated completion date of 2030. The leasing office is expected to open in fall 2028, allowing potential residents to secure their spots in this innovative community.
PMB and Pillar Properties are leading the development, with Merrill Gardens managing the community. Urbal Architecture is responsible for the architectural design. Nolan Weinberg, senior vice president of PMB, highlights the project's potential to enhance campus vibrancy and promote intergenerational relationships, a vision shared by all partners involved.
Community Engagement and Opportunities
Once the community is operational, SDSU plans to collaborate with Merrill Gardens to provide internships, employment, and community engagement opportunities for students. Residents will have access to campus programming and lifelong learning initiatives, creating a dynamic and enriching environment for all.
